Giuseppe’s Italian is a high-altitude dining destination located at Lift 19 within the Telluride Ski Resort, positioned at an elevation of 11,880 feet in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The project was developed by Alex Shamrai, in association with Portland Architects Barry L. NewDelman and Ron B. Woodruff.
The restaurant occupies a remote alpine site accessible only by ski or snowcat, presenting unique design and construction challenges related to climate, logistics, and site conditions. The architectural response focuses on resilience, efficiency, and a strong relationship to the surrounding mountain landscape.
Design Concept
The building is conceived as a modern alpine refuge, drawing inspiration from traditional mountain lodges while incorporating contemporary materials and expansive glazing to capture panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The design emphasizes warmth and shelter for guests arriving from the slopes while maintaining a visual connection to the dramatic alpine environment.
